TOP-DIMKR: In-House Die Making Procedures
Rev: 12/06/2017
Scope: This procedure describes the way that dies and accompanying tooling are made at Trinity Forge’s Machining Department.
Procedure:
STEP | WHO | WHEN | INFO TO USE | WHAT TO DO |
1 |
Machining Department Supervisor | Upon receipt of Job Order, Purchase Order | CMM Operator/Programmer; verbal instructions from Forging Engineer; Solid Models; existing CNC Programs | Review Job Order , Purchase Order to be sure all necessary information is present; work with Forging Engineer on any special machining instructions; review 3D Die Design Checksheet; If Purchase Order is from outside customer notify Customer Service Representative with all needed information to set the job per TOP-NEWDI; handle customer materials per TOP-CSUPL; work with Forging Engineer on any models that may need created; make tooling per information gathered; insert tooling into the Die Machining Schedule; file Purchase Order; when CNC Programs are needed, check first for existing programs; if programs are already created, review program revisions with the revisions on the prints, Job Order or Purchase Orders; if revision has changed, review and change programs if needed; if last save date of Solid Model is later than the date of the program, review and change program if needed; if programs do not exist create programs per current revisions; if machine work is for insertable plug(s), go to step 5. |
2 | CNC Die Sinker | Tooling is up for machining | Verbal instructions from Machining Department Programmer, Die Sinking/Tooling Supervisor or Forging Engineer; CNC Programs; Job Order; prints | Set-up and machine tooling per CNC Programs, Job Order, prints and/or verbal instructions from Forging Engineer; complete the tooling by doing any polishing or de-burring needed; stamp die numbers per Job Order or Tooling Purchase Order if needed. |
3 | Scan Arm Operator | Dies, tooling, part submitted for inspection | Dies, tooling, Solid Models, print; Job Order | Scan
dies
with scan arm; send dies and tooling to Die Shop. Click here for a helpful hint: TFI Laser Scanning Guidelines |
4 | Engineer Assistant | Dies,
tooling, part scan data submitted for review |
Dies, tooling, part, Solid Models, print, Job Order | Create Scan Report; if questionable dimensional results, send to Forging Engineer for review, proceed to Step 5; if approved, send approval email to all Forging Engineer's Machine Department Supervisors Die Shop Supervisors and Production Scheduler ; if rejected, send rejection email to a pre-approved distribution list; return to Step 1. |
THIS SECTION ONLY IF DIE SCAN REPORT IS QUESTIONABLE |
||||
5 | Forging Engineer | Dies, tooling, part questionable | Scan Report, visual review of dies, tooling, part | Review Scan Report; if approved notify Engineering Assistant to send approval email, continue to step 9; if rejected notify Engineering Assistant to send to rejection email, return to step 1. |
THIS SECTION FOR INSERTABLE PLUG INSPECTION ONLY |
||||
6 | CNC Die Sinker | Insertable plugs need to be machined | Verbal instructions from Machining Department Programmer, Die/Tooling Supervisor or Forging Engineer; CNC Programs; Job Order; prints; 3D models | Set up and machine plugs per CNC Programs, Job Order, prints and/or verbal instructions from Programmer or Forging Engineer; complete the plugs by doing any polishing or de-burring needed; submit plugs to QC Inspector for inspection. |
7 | QC Inspector | Plugs received for inspection | Solid Models; print; Job Order | Check plugs and send approval/rejection email to all Forging Engineer's , Machine Department Supervisors, Die Shop Supervisors, and Production Scheduler. |
8 | Machine Department Supervisor | After plugs have been checked by QC Inspector | Plug's approval/rejection e-mail; CNC Programs; verbal instructions from Forging Engineer or QC Inspector | If
plugs
were not approved consult with
Forging Engineer about what changes need
to be made to the plugs, change CNC Programs if needed, consult with CNC
Die Sinker about modifications, re-machine or remake plugs
and resubmit
per Step 6; once approved, send plugs to Die Shop. |
9 | Anyone in Die Shop | Dies or tooling arrive from die sinker | Dies, tooling print, Die Layout | Process dies and all related tooling per TOP-DSHOP. |
