TOP-SECTL: Secondary Tooling Inspection

Rev: 12/06/2017

Scope: This procedure covers the inspection and storage of tooling or tooling related casts (dimensional representations of an impression taken by pouring plaster or other material directly into the impression or scanning of the die) related to post-forging manipulation of part dimensions including hot or cold.

Procedure:

STEP WHO WHEN INFO TO USE WHAT TO DO
1 Die Shop Helper Upon receiving a newly (re) sunk or questionable hot pad die, re-strike die, or cold coin die Die number on tooling die; own observations As designated by Forging Engineer through email or Job Order take required cast impression or prepare tooling for scanning; forward cast or tooling to CMM Programmer/Operator; label each impression cast with die sinker name, die number, Job Order Number (P.O. Number for outside vendors); date, shim and impression (for multi-impression dies)
2 CMM Programmer/Operator Within 2 days of receiving cast or tooling Forging Print with  Engineering notes on die sink tolerances Thoroughly inspect dimensions of cast (typically using CMM) or actual tooling; If scanning, apply anti-glare spray to tooling for laser scanning with portable scan/measuring inspection arm; prepare Cast Report or Scan Report highlighting any out-of-tolerance readings and forward the report to Forging Engineer
3 Forging Engineer* If cast or tooling is disapproved Cast Report or Scan Report; Forging Print Determine degree of changes needed to tooling or hot pad die repair; stamp "Reject" on Cast Report or email rejection of Scan Report; temporarily hold Cast Report or Scan Report unless in own judgment tooling repair is too minor to justify another inspection; destroy disapproved cast and after tooling is corrected go back to step 1
4 CMM Programmer/Operator If cast or tooling is approved Cast or Scan Report Stamp "Accept" on Cast Report or email Scan Report approval, notify Forging Engineer and file report in Engineering files; if cast made forward cast to Engineering Assistant for storage.
5 Engineering Assistant Upon receiving cast
Cast If a cast was made; verify cast marked with die number, date, die sinker and "HOT PAD DIE", "RE-STRIKE DIE" or "COLD COIN DIE"; store cast in cast cabinet after discarding or marking casts already in cabinet as "OLD HOT PAD DIE", "OLD RE-STRIKE DIE", or "OLD COLD COIN DIE"

*" Forging Engineer" refers to the member of the Engineering Department assigned the die in question. If there is any question as to which Forging Engineer is assigned a particular die, the VP-Quality & Engineering  decides.
