TOP-TOOLT: Identification & Storage of Tooling

Rev: 07/30/2021

Scope: This procedure covers the marking and placement of forging dies and other die-specific tooling so that it can be easily located and identified.

Procedure:

STEP WHO WHEN INFO TO USE WHAT TO DO
1 Die Prep Helper Whenever handling tooling Job Order, print or visual identification of tooling Be sure the full die number is clearly metal-stamped on the tooling in a spot that is easily seen when the tooling is on a rack or the floor. For an insert or multiple-impression die, the suffix must follow the die number ("Z", "Y", "X" and so forth for insert holder ID; for multiples, "D" for 2-at-a-time, "T" for 3, "Q" for 4, "F" for 5, and "S" for 6). If tooling is shared by a group of dies then it either should be stamped with all die numbers, or with some code assigned by VP-Quality & Engineering that he can trace back to all the dies that use it.
2 Die Prep Helper Whenever storing tooling Die number stamped on tooling (if multiple, use lowest die number); Die Storage Log If placing in temporary storage on floor or such, position so die number can easily be seen or clearly mark die number in paint stick so that it can easily be seen; if storing in racks, store dies, trimmers, etc. in the same space placing tooling on top of dies whenever possible; if tooling is too large to fit on top of dies, then store beside dies as close to dies as possible; write down all the information required by the Die Storage Log; (if any question as to organization of tooling racks, ask Die Prep Leadman)
3 Die Prep Helper Whenever retrieving tooling Upon finding tooling improperly marked or stored Die number stamped on tooling (if multiple, use lowest die number); own observation Remove tooling from rack; write down all the information required by the Die Storage Log Immediately report problem to a Die Prep Leadman or Die Shop Supervisor
4 Die Prep Helper At end of shift Die Storage Log File Die Storage Log in Die Storage Log binder in Die Prep area; when there are multiple die versions identify which die versions was used for the last Job Order.
5 Die Shop Supervisor or his designee Daily Die Storage Log binder Enter Die Storage Log information into the Tooling Program
LOSS  OR DAMAGED DIES/TOOLING
6.1 Die Shop Supervisor or his designeeUpon Damage or loss of dies/toolingJob Order, print or visual identification of toolingIn the event that any die/tooling is damaged or destroyed either during production or storage. Immediately inform Engineering and Operations Manager.
6.2Forging Engineer, Operations ManagerNotified of damaged or loss toolingProduction ReportImmediately evaluate the dies/tooling to determine a recovery plan. Once a plan has been determined, notify customer of any potential damages or time loss.
RECLAIM OF DIES/TOOLING
7.1Engineering Assistant, VP of Quality and Engineering2 years since previous runJob HistoryWhen the need to reclaim a die has been dertermined, reiew the history of the tooling to insure a minimum of 2 years has passed since the most recent PO.
7.2VP of Quality and Engineering, Operations Manager Upon determining a Die/Tooling is eligible for reclaimJob HistoryOnce determined that a die can be reclaimed. Reach out to the customer to determine if any future orders will be placed. If none foreseen at this time, disposition die to be reclaimed.
7.3Engineering AssistantUpon receiving disposition to reclaim dieEmailCreate T-JO to reclaim die.

Insure steps are placed in router to remove current die impression

*If die is to be re sunk with a different impression, then previous impression will naturally be removed.
DISPOSAL OF DIES/TOOLING
8Engineering AssistantWhen die/tooling is no longer usableDie reviewIf die/tooling has been damaged or is no longer functionally useable, create a T-JO to remove current impressions. Once current impressions have been removed, dies/tooling may be scrapped with current forging flashing.
