TOP-BLAST: Blasting

Scope: This procedure covers blasting, the cleaning of scale-covered or rusted forgings with steel shot and grit. Other cleaning processes such as tumbling are treated as any other post-production process.

Blaster Operator or Post Forge Helper
Anyone brings cooled parts (below 150°) to
blaster area
Tag
on parts container; if questions,
look into Process Plan on the Production
Floor Traveler (in QC
Inspection Folder)
Keep
heat codes and similar jobs separated; follow procedures on the
Production Floor
Traveler; determine whether to clean or not and, if
so, the appropriate cleaning time and grit/shot mixture; determine the
correct containers to unload into.

Blaster Operator or Post Forge Helper
IF
PARTS ARE TO BE BLASTED: As soon as blaster time is available
Production
Floor Traveler
Load
blaster and clean parts for 20 minutes, unless Production
Floor Traveler
indicates differently or directed by a supervisor.

Blaster Operator or Post Forge Helper
When
cleaning is complete
Production
Floor Traveler
Unload
parts into inspection buggy and move buggy to appropriate QC inspection
area; tag each buggy stating parts require inspection.
BLASTING
PARTS IN 601 OR 605 (BIG BLASTERS)

Post Forge Helper brings parts to blaster area (typically after heat treat)
Tag on parts container, and, if questions, look into Process Plan on the
Production Floor
Traveler (in QC Inspection Folder)
Keep
heat codes and similar jobs separated; determine per the Production Floor Traveler
whether to clean or not and, cleaning time and grit/shot
mixture; unload parts onto inspection table.

Load
blaster and cleans parts for 20 minutes, unless Production Floor Traveler
indicates differently or directed by supervisor.

Blaster Operator or Post Forge Helper
When
cleaning is complete
Production

Unload
parts into appropriate containers and move parts going to heat treat
area or weigh-count area; unload parts onto inspection table that are
ready to ship.
